Welcome, Framing & The AI Moment in Humanities and Law

Opening by GreenAI and SNU leadership. A frank, non-technical reckoning with where generative AI stands today — what it can and cannot do, why it changes the stakes for Humanities and Law specifically, and what this day is designed to achieve. Just an honest framing to anchor everything that follows.

Speaker:   Prof. Dr. Anupam Basu  ·  Vice Chancellor, Sister Nivedita University

Prof. Dr. Amrita Basu  ·  School of Cognitive Science, Jadavpur University

Prof. Aditi Nath Sarkar  ·  Cultural Historian, Dhirubhai Ambani University

How AI Thinks & Discipline Deep-Dive

A seamlessly integrated block that moves between concept and practice with no hard internal boundary. The conceptual thread covers how large language models actually work — hallucination, bias, prompt design as an academic skill, and a forward look at where AI is heading. Running through this in parallel: participants get their first hands-on experience with the GreenAI Lab, working through discipline-specific prompt cards tailored for Humanities, Social Sciences and Law. Proactive strategies for preventing hallucination and rigorous citation practices woven throughout.

A deliberate reset between the extended instructional block and the capstone project — so you arrive at independent work with a clear head.

Capstone Project

The centrepiece of the day. Participants work from a shared corpus of primary source material — and pursue a structured inquiry from the vantage point of their own discipline. Historians, sociologists, legal scholars, and others each bring their disciplinary lens to the same material, surfacing questions about institutional evolution, social change, and interpretive authority. AI tools are available as a research aid; their use is optional. Every participant submits a single report of their findings by the end of the session. Facilitator-supported, self-directed.

Lunch

A genuine, unstructured break — positioned deliberately after the most cognitively demanding block of the day. Time to recharge, connect and decompress before the afternoon sessions.

AI Applications in Humanities & Law

This session maps out where AI is already making a measurable difference in Humanities and Law teaching and research — from multilingual source analysis and archival search acceleration to qualitative data synthesis and legal precedent mapping. Includes a live demonstration of VidhiLab, a multilingual AI tool built specifically for legal research in the Indian context. Concrete, applicable, and grounded in real academic workflows.

Speaker:   Prof. Dr. Kripabandhu Ghosh  ·  Department of Computational and Data Sciences, IISER Kolkata

Subinay Adhikary  ·  Department of Computational and Data Sciences, IISER Kolkata

Sustainable and Right-Sized Intelligence

Delivered live online, this extended session reframes AI from raw capability to responsible, sustainable use. The conversation moves from the hidden energy and resource cost of large AI models, to the ethics of responsible use as an extension of academic integrity, to what it practically means to match the scale of your AI tool to the actual scale of your task. A perspective that will change how you think about every AI choice you make — not just today, but going forward.

Policy, Evaluation & What Happens Next

The closing session moves from discussion to decisions.

Data Protection & Policy Grounding: A targeted session on what data protection law actually requires of academics using AI tools — grounded in DPDP Act 2023 obligations and their real implications for institutional AI adoption, with grounding in NEP 2020 and UGC 2023 mandates. A walkthrough of the SNU AI policy framework, with open input from faculty on department-specific clauses.

What You Will Walk Away With

Outcomes, Not Overviews

🧠

AI Fluency for Your Discipline

A working critical vocabulary for AI tailored to Humanities and Law — so you can evaluate tools independently, not just receive expert opinion about them.

🛠️

Confident Hands-On Skill

Real time with AI tools on real academic tasks — not demo content designed to impress. You will have done the work, not watched someone else do it.

🏛️

A Completed Capstone Project

A discipline-specific research output — produced by you, on real primary source material — that demonstrates what AI-assisted inquiry actually looks like in your field.

📋

A Draft Department AI Policy

A co-created, institution-specific one-page policy framework ready for departmental adoption — covering student use, research integrity, and DPDP Act 2023 compliance.

🤝

A Peer Faculty Network

Colleagues across departments navigating the same questions — a community of practice that does not end when the day does.

🏷️

UGC-Aligned Certificate

A GreenAI-issued certificate of AI faculty development, aligned with UGC 2023 Faculty Development Programme guidelines.

The Policy Outcome

Leaving with More Than Literacy

Most AI workshops end with awareness. This one ends with a document your department can actually use. The closing policy session uses your department's own conversations from the day as raw material — not a generic template filled in afterwards.

The resulting policy covers what AI may and may not be used for in student work, research, and administrative communication — grounded in NEP 2020's emphasis on critical thinking, UGC 2023 guidelines, and DPDP Act 2023 data compliance requirements.

GreenAI provides the structured template; departments complete and own their version. SNU receives a consolidated draft for institution-wide adoption.

Academic Integrity & Student Use

When and how students may use AI in assessments, research, and submissions — with discipline-specific nuance for Law versus Humanities.

Faculty Research Practice

AI use in grant applications, publications, and peer review — aligned with journal and funding body requirements.

Data Privacy — DPDP Act 2023

What institutional, student, and research data may be entered into AI systems — and what must remain offline.

Pedagogical Intent

How AI should serve — and not replace — critical thinking, close reading, and disciplinary rigour in the classroom.

Annual Review Cycle

A built-in review mechanism to keep the policy current as both the technology and the regulatory landscape evolve.

Assessment & Continuity

Evaluation Built Into the Day

This programme measures real change — not just satisfaction. Data is collected before, during, and after the event to produce meaningful insights for participants, departments, and the institution.

Capstone Output

Discipline-Specific Research Submission

The capstone isn't just an exercise — it's a submission. Each participant produces a single report from the day's primary source work, reviewed after the event. What you chose to look at, and how you looked at it, tells us something.

5 Days After

Follow-Up Survey & Participation Insights

Five days out, we check back in. Not to tick boxes — to find out what stayed with you, what shifted, and what is still unresolved. The responses, alongside capstone submissions and Workbench signals from the day, are compiled into a participation insights report shared with SNU.

Certification

Certificates Issued at Day-5

Certificates go out at the five-day mark — once submissions have been reviewed and the follow-up is in. UGC-aligned, issued per participant, and tied to the programme rather than to any test. Something worth keeping on record.

GreenAI AI Lab — Departmental Service

Take the Lab Back to Your Department

The AI Lab environment you work in throughout the day is available as an ongoing departmental subscription — a secure, sovereign AI platform built on GreenAI's India-hosted infrastructure. No individual accounts, no personal API keys, no data leaving India.
